SimLab – Students for Surgery - Surgical Simulation Lab for Research and teaching
"SimLab - Students for Surgery" has been started by students of human medicine in order to improve the surgical training at the UKE. An integral part is the minimal invasive training in a laparoscopic setting. SimLab uses big boxes, which simulate surgical procedures in adults, as well as small, child surgical neonatal boxes in accordance with the example from Munich for the training of minimal invasive child surgical procedures. This practical training enables students to learn and to deepen surgical techniques close to reality. By producing customized anatomic 3D-models and the implementation of innovative teaching methods the project strives to expand the surgical training for students continuously as well as in other disciplines e. g. orthopedics with osteosyntheses simulation.
2. Societal significance and cooperation
The SimLab-project contributes significantly to the optimization of surgical training in Hamburg. The opportunity for students to improve their surgical abilities also aims at direct impacts on patient care. The interprofessional expertise, supported by national cooperation with different surgical departments facilitates the effective transfer of experiences and knowledge. The students not only gain practical skills but pedagogic teaching competences which are of great importance in the operative everyday life.
3. Future development
The SimLab plans to expand its offer and activities continuously and to integrate new digital technologies in the surgical teaching. The focus of the long-term planning is the vision of a comprehensive surgical training center. The expansion of the project portfolio enables the students to grow in an innovative and interactive learning surrounding and contributes to the continuous improvement of surgical training and research.
