On 9 July, the funding decisions for the student research groups focusing on data literacy in the fourth and final round of the call for proposals were made as part of the Data Science Slam #4 in the Phil D lecture theatre at Von-Melle-Park 6. A total of ten student groups submitted their project ideas, seven of which were selected and invited to present their concepts in short 7-minute pitches.
The event was opened by Prof Dr Ingrid Schirmer. Uwe Jens Neumann, CEO of Hamburg@work, then addressed the audience and shared his experience in networking. On this special occasion, Prof Dr Ingrid Schirmer gave a farewell speech as part of her retirement. We would like to expressly thank her for her invaluable contributions to the Digital and Data Literacy in Teaching Lab (DDLitLab) project. Prof Dr Kai-Uwe Schnapp moderated the rest of the evening.
Following the varied and creative pitches and a careful examination and discussion of these, the selection committee decided to support all seven projects presented with funding of up to 10,000 euros each. The selected projects are listed below with short and long titles and show the thematic range and diversity of ideas relating to data literacy:
- Climate protection - unevenly distributed? A spatial analysis of climate protection projects and social inequality in Hamburg
- E2E Robot Soccer: Fully AI-based perception and control of an autonomous football-playing robot
- LegalGPT: An open-source AI system for the transparent explanation of German legal texts
- FinWAIID: Developing a deep learning approach for automated photo identification using vertical aerial drone imagery of fin whales
- KulturBanause - Discover culture in Hamburg together!
- Beenough: Spatial investigation of the competition potential between wild and honey bees in relation to food availability in northern Germany
- Pathfinder: Navigating AI-Driven Semantic Text Analysis for Decision Making in Idea Management
After the official announcement of the funding decisions, a get-together with snacks and drinks gave students, mentors, guests and the selection committee the opportunity to get to know each other better and discuss the projects.
The DDLitLab team would like to thank all participants, speakers and especially the student groups for their creative projects and their commitment to data literacy at Universität Hamburg. Details of the projects will be published on our website in the coming weeks. We look forward to accompanying the groups in the project implementation from October 2024!
