The opening session on Tuesday, 17 October 2023, marked the start of the third round of the interdisciplinary lecture series Data Worlds 1. 330 students in total will immerse themselves in the world of data and digitalisation in the coming semester. The lecture offers introductions to the definition, storage, organisation and evaluation of data, machine learning and neural networks as well as the possibilities of AI-based data analysis. For the first time this semester, students will also have the opportunity to take part in an in-depth exercise that introduces the programming language R with Jupyter Notebooks.
Over the past two years, the interdisciplinary team has reached a total of almost 1,000 students with the Data Worlds 1 and 2 lecture cycle. In doing so, they have taught both the competent handling of data and data analysis methods as well as critical reflection on the significance of datafication and digitalisation and their consequences for politics, society, business and law. Bachelor's, Master's and contact students as well as doctoral candidates from 86 different degree programmes at Universität Hamburg have taken part in the lectures so far.
The number of participants and the keen interest shown by students in the topics of digitalisation and datafication underline the importance of these topics for university teaching. The broad interest shown by students from a wide range of disciplines also emphasises the general educational importance of these topics.
