At the Data Science Slam #2, the final part of the selection process to promote student data literacy projects, eight selected student groups took to the stage of the INF lecture theatre at Jungiusstraße 11 on 9 February.
The event was once again introduced by Prof Dr Ingrid Schirmer, who welcomed all those present. Prof. Dr Matthias Finck, Professor of Information Technologies with a focus on web technologies at HAW Hamburg, then addressed the data-driven challenges of our society, the need for data-savvy specialists and the general importance of data skills in his welcoming speech, always with a reference to the student groups present. Prof Dr Mathias Fischer then hosted the evening and handed the stage over to the invited student groups.
In 7-minute, varied short presentations, they presented their innovative, data-driven project ideas to the audience in an accessible and creative way. The students covered a wide range of topics: from cross-media analyses of reporting on groups of climate activists, the development of software through no- or low-code platforms, sustainability studies through the sharing of objects to the investigation of Malay music and its cultural backgrounds, the variety of project ideas left nothing to be desired.
The limited number of funding places and the remarkable pitch performances of all the student groups presented the enthusiastic jury with a difficult task, which ultimately decided in favour of funding six projects.
The projects will start in the summer semester 2023 and run for six to twelve months. We will publish details of the projects on our website in the coming weeks.
At the subsequent get-together with finger food and drinks, the student groups were able to get to know each other, make new contacts and even discuss further project ideas.
On behalf of the DDLitLab team, we would like to thank everyone involved, including the student groups for their high-quality pitches, Prof. Dr. Matthias Finck for the introductory greeting, the jury, the audience, the guests and the organisation team!
