At the Data Science Slam, the final part of the selection process to promote student data literacy projects, eight selected student groups took to the stage of the Wolfgang Pauli lecture theatre in Jungiusstraße 9 on 14 July.
The event was introduced by Prof Dr Ingrid Schirmer, who welcomed all those present and briefly introduced the Digital and Data Literacy in Teaching Lab project. Matthias Wieckmann, Head of Digital Strategy at the City of Hamburg's Office for IT and Digitalisation, then addressed the data-driven society, current urban projects and the need for data-savvy specialists in his welcoming speech. Prof Dr Mathias Fischer then hosted the evening and handed the stage over to the invited student groups.
In 7-minute, varied short presentations, they presented their innovative, data-driven project ideas to the audience in an accessible and creative way. The students covered a wide range of topics: from country comparison discourse analyses on Covid-19, predictions of share price trends and the availability of rental bicycles to improved analyses of apple orchards and bee health, the variety of project ideas left nothing to be desired. The jury, impressed by the remarkable pitch performances, then decided to fund all eight projects with up to EUR 10,000 each.
The projects will start in the winter semester 2022/2023 and will run for six to twelve months. We will publish details of the projects on our website in the coming weeks.
At the subsequent get-together with finger food and cold drinks, the student groups were able to get to know each other, make new contacts and also discuss further project ideas, for example with the invited representatives from Ankerplatz, Inovex and LangTec.
On behalf of the DDLitLab team, we would like to thank everyone involved, including the student groups for their high-quality pitches, Matthias Wieckmann for the introductory greeting, the jury, the audience, the external guests and the organisation team!
