The DDLitLab has been funded by the ‘Innovation in University Teaching’ foundation since August 2021 and has been hard at work at Universität Hamburg ever since: The first teaching lab grant was announced, teaching lab winning projects were selected, the lecture ‘Data Worlds I - Introduction to Data Science’ was designed and successfully implemented and the mapping of digital teaching and learning offerings for our repository is still in full swing.
At the beginning of February, the time had come and, after a few postponements due to the pandemic, we were able to officially introduce ourselves in a digital kick-off event. The two-hour programme was particularly enriched by the invited guest speakers.
In her welcoming address, Susanne Rupp, Vice President for Studies and Teaching at Universität Hamburg, explained the developments in digital teaching at UHH. In addition to specific projects, funding structures and potentials and limitations, she also addressed developments in the content of digital teaching.
Kai-Uwe Schnapp and Katharina Kleinen-von Königslöw, the DDLitLab spokespersons, then presented the project. Kai-Uwe Schnapp focussed on the content of the project: What actually is data literacy? What do we need to do to embed data literacy education for students at Universität Hamburg? How can teachers be supported in teaching data literacy? Katharina Kleinen-von Königslöw then presented the 14 teaching lab projects that will be funded by the DDLitLab over the next two semesters.
Jörg Schmoll, Head of the Digital Strategy & Communication Department at the Office for IT & Digitalisation, offered a perspective on digitalisation beyond the University of Hamburg. He presented the City of Hamburg's digitalisation strategies using a variety of examples.
Kenza Ait Si Abbou, an expert in artificial intelligence and robotics, who addressed the topic of digital responsibility in her presentation, also gave the audience food for thought in the subsequent discussion.
